Our namesake is the USS Constitution ship. In the winter of 1794, the U.S. government gave final approval to construct six naval vessels with the purpose of protecting our young nation from hostile British and French forces. One of these ships was named the USS Constitution. She is the oldest commissioned U.S. warship and now resides in Boston Harbor.
In 1812, she met in battle with the British warship the HMS Guerriere. It took the Constitution but 20 minutes to sink the British ship and according to the day's log, U.S. sailors witnessed an iron cannonball strike her sides. As the Guerriere sank, a British sailor was heard exclaiming that the USS Constitution's sides must be made of iron - hence her famous nickname, Old Ironsides. May your goals in life be as indestructible.
